Ted Sorenson, speechwriter to JFK

What is a speechwriter?

Here’s a video of a man who accepted a unique opportunity, who developed his skills and who worked hand in hand with JFK putting real, world-shaping ideas into words. In this video he speaks of the values he shared with John Kennedy, of the intense thirteen days of the Cuban crisis, of the letters and books he crafted for the man he chose to stand by. Listen to what he has to say about … asking questions. After all, which came first: the question or the answer?

Enlightening, serious, powerful and above all, human. A man who devotedly worked hard – no, a man who worked as hard and as devotedly as he could – to try to make the world a better place.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

In The Wizard of Oz … Dorothy dreams … and sings … Somewhere Over The Rainbow. All-Time Masterpiece. performed by Judy Garland.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
There’s a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.

Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can’t I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can’t I?

A fiddler in Edinburgh

One afternoon last summer this fiddler was playing on the sidewalks of Edinburgh. I asked him if I could record him. He agreed. Here’s one minute 11 seconds of some fine fiddlin’. OK … I admit it … I need some practice filming with my iphone … and a better camera wouldn’t hurt! But the sound is there! Enjoy.
