When are synonyms … synonyms?

2 words that mean the same thing … hmmm …. I’m suspicious ….

A while back, I drove up to a window at a drive-in on Tybee and was ordering for my kids. The voice through the speaker said something which to my ears was … I regret to say … incomprehensible. I asked her to repeat it. It sounded something like this: smameediola? I asked her to say it again … and she did.  And a third time. Same effect. smameediomolaa??? After another deep breath and accompanying effort, one of my daughters said: “Dad, stop it! she said:  small? medium? or large?”

I wish she had said, little, medium or big … but they don’t … It’s always smameediola? This is fastfood.

big and large, for example … sound like synonyms but they’re especially the same in relation to small and little.

Good luck. It’s all in the sound.
